Programme to mark birth anniversary of poet laureate Kuvempu

Sahyadri Rangataranga, a city-based theatre troupe has organised an unique programme at Veerashaiva

cremation ground in Mandli locality in the city on December 29 to mark the birth anniversary of Poet laureate Kuvempu. Kuvempu was a progressive writer who articulated his views against superstitious practices and reactionary forces in his literary works.

Speaking to presspersons in the city on Saturday, Kanthesh Kadaramandalagi, president of Sahyadri Rangataranga said, “there is a taboo associated with death and cremation grounds in the society. To debunk these notions, it was planned to observe the birth anniversary of Kuvempu at a cremation ground,” he said.

Writer S. Panchakshari, a retired professor who was a student of Kuvempu, will read out selected parts of the legendary author’s Smashana Kurukshetra , that highlights the futility of war and the inevitability of death on the occasion. Vocalists Nagarathna and Nitish Kadaramandalagi will present songs penned by Kuvempu.

Civic workers serving with Shivamogga City Corporation will also be felicitated on the occasion, he said.

Chairperson of Legislative Council D.H. Shankaramurthy, Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar, member of Rajya Sabha Ayanur Manjunath; Y.S.V. Datta, Kadur MLA, and K.B. Prasanna Kumar, Shivamogga MLA, will take part in the programme, he said.
