People of all faiths participated in large numbers in the procession taken out as part of Muharram here on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

Shia Muslims took out a procession to mark the martyrdom of Iman Husain and resorted to self-flagellation.

The procession of ‘panjas’, which is the main feature of Muharram, was held in various localities and villages.

In Dharwad, processions from various areas converged at Bhus Galli near Mangalwar Pet. The ‘panjas’ were later carried to streams for immersion, and hundreds of people offered puja to the ‘panjas’ along the way.

Similar processions were taken out at Navalur and Hosayallapur.

A group of the Irani Muslim youths of Shia sect took out a separate procession near the Kalghatgi road.

The police had tightened security.
