July 17, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - Shivamogga:

The State government has commenced necessary preparations to upgrade Tirthahalli Town Panchayat into Town Municipal Council (TMC).

The office of the secretary of the Department of Municipal Administration had written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Shivamogga on June 16 directing the district administration to conduct a survey on the population of Tirthahalli town, its administration and civic infrastructure. The DC had written to Chief Officer of Tirthahalli Town Panchayat and tahsildar of Tirthahalli on July 13 seeking a report in this regard. According to Karnataka Municipalities Act, 1964, a town should have population of 20,000 to become a TMC. According to the census of the year 2011, the population of Tirthahalli town was at 14,751. It has been planned to bring 10 villages in the vicinity including Melina Kuruvalli, Vithal Nagar, Yadehallikere, Indira Nagar, Shivarajapura, and Tudki under the purview of Tirthahalli town and thereby meet the criteria.

Rahmathullah Asadi, president of Tirthahalli Town Panchayat said that the meeting of the panchayat will be convened shortly to discuss the issue. The meeting will pass a resolution giving its consent for the proposal for upgradation. It will also discuss the issue of bringing the new areas under the purview of the town and on providing necessary civic amenities to those areas.
