District in-charge Minister Umashree has instructed officials to take over private borewells to supply drinking water to scarcity-hit villages and towns in the district.

At a meeting here on Monday, she said that this step should be considered before any plans to dig borewells.

Officials said that they had identified 55 borewells to be taken over. The Minister was not impressed and said it was not enough. “Scarcity is very severe. You have to increase this figure significantly,” she said. Officials said that according to guidelines, the government had a mandate to supply a minimum of 20 litres of water per person per day. The Minister said that they should make preparations for supplying larger quantities so that people could store enough water even if they were unable to get water one or two days in a week.

Deputy Commissioner Anurag Tewari , ZP CEO Pavan Kumar Malpati , SP Prakash Nikam, Assistant Commissioner Venkat Raja and others were present.
