June 24, 2011 09:32 am | Updated 09:32 am IST - Bangalore:

The State Government has suspended five officials of Bangalore Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara for allegedly allowing prison inmates to roam freely in the city.

Four inmates, who are serving life terms for murder, were found roaming freely in the vicinity of central prison recently. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa ordered an inquiry into the alleged incident on Wednesday.

According to sources, the convicts were enjoying ‘special privileges' inside the prison, courtesy the jail administration. “Investigations commenced on Thursday. The Government suspended jailer Shivakumar, head warden Ganigar, wardens Manjappa Gowda, Murthy and Babu Talwar,” sources in the Prison Department told The Hindu . According to sources, the four jailbirds often went out of the jail premises for hours and had been spotted by sections of the media smoking, visiting eateries and meeting friends.
