Priority to promoting beach tourism: Sorake

Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, said on Monday that an action plan of Rs. 9.13 crore had been drawn to develop beaches in Udupi district.

He was speaking after unfurling the national flag at the Republic Day function organised by the District Administration at MGM College grounds here.

Mr. Sorake said the district had several pristine beaches. The objective of this action plan was to exploit the potential of these beaches and promote tourism. As part of promoting pilgrim tourism in Karkala, an amount of Rs. 60 lakh had been released for the construction of a Yatri Nivas there. An amount of Rs. 10.55 crore had been released by the Department of Tourism for developing eight link roads in the district.

A proposal for the construction of two multi-purpose shelters, three bridges and 29 connecting bridges under National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP) in Udupi district at a cost of Rs. 40 crore had been submitted to the government. The multi-purpose shelters would be constructed at Thekkatte in Kundapur taluk and at Padu village in Udupi taluk under the NCRMP. The Union and State governments would plough in funds in 75:25 ratio for the NCRMP.

Steps were being taken to expedite the work on widening (four-laning) of Talapady-Kundapur stretch of National Highway 66. The government would speed up work on the Varahi irrigation project.

The district administration had already handed over 68 acres of land for the construction of industrial area at Belapu village to the Karnataka Industrial Development Board. Its construction had already started.

While 10 acres of land had been identified for the construction of Kendriya Vidyalaya at Alevoor village, land had been provided for the construction of a Police Training Centre in Uppoor village. A five acre land had been provided for the construction of computerised driving track in Udupi taluk.

The government had given its approval for establishing a science centre in the district at a cost of Rs. 3.66 lakh. A mini Vidhan Soudha had been sanctioned for Udupi taluk and its construction would begin shortly. The construction of the mini Vidhan Soudha in Kundapur was in the final stages, Mr. Sorake said.

P. Yuvaraj, President of Udupi City Municipal Council, Savita Kotian, President of Zilla Panchayat, R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, K. Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, were present.
