The authorities at Bandipur Tiger Reserve have taken precautions to prevent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease among ungulates, transmitted from domestic cattle.
A team of experts from the Animal Husbandry Department visited villages surrounding the reserve last week to ascertain if there was an outbreak of the disease among domestic cattle.
Conservator of Forests Kantharaj, who is also Director of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, said the team did not find cattle displaying symptoms of the disease. He said that domestic cattle living on the forest fringes were inoculated regularly. “The practice is to dust the forest area leading to the watering hole with medicines. The animals invariably come to the watering hole and the medicine gets embedded on their feet.”
