Belagavi District Kannada Organisations Action Committee has warned of possible linguistic disharmony and threats to the peace in the event of the forthcoming Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Sammelana being misused to raise controversial issues relating to prolonged boundary dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Committee members, who submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner on Wednesday, said here on Thursday that the district administration should ensure that the organisers of the drama conference stick to the cultural issues without raking up the sensitive boundary dispute or adopt any resolution in favour of Maharashtra on the occasion.
Nada Geethe
The committee also strongly opposed the moves to trim the length of the ‘Nada Geethe’ Jaya Bharatha Jananiya Thanu Jaathe’ and prune the time of its rendition. The committee members said the composition was not just a poem but had been revered and sung as a State anthem in all government functions, besides in private functions across the state. It was also sung by Kannada ‘sanghas’ outside the state and country.
The Kannada organisation would be forced to launch a state-wide agitation if the government conceded to the recommendation of a committee on squeezing the length and content of the state anthem, committee president Ashok Chandargi said.
