Members of the Udupi district unit of the All Polytechnics Students Union staged a dharna demanding super carry over system, in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on Tuesday.

Shahil, union leader, said that since the syllabus of polytechnics had got changed completely this year, the students who had studied second year under the previous syllabus, should be allowed to study in third year even if they had failed in more than four subjects.

The syllabi of polytechnics were normally changed once in five years. The students should be allowed “super carry over” to get into the third year, irrespective of the number of subjects in which they had failed.

Since the semester system was being followed in the three-year polytechnic course, it would, at times, not be possible for students to attend exams due to illness or some unforeseen event. The present rule which allowed students who had failed up to four subjects to third year was wrong. A “super carry over” should be provided for this year so that the future of the students was not affected. Those who had learnt under the previous syllabi would find it tough to follow the new syllabus. The Department of Technical Education should not play with the future of the students, Shahil said.

Prajwal D. Shetty, president of the district unit of the union, Rohith Poojary, Shrivatsa, Chethan Poojary, Vishwas, Likith, Sithil, union leaders, were present.

They submitted a memorandum to Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, who said that if the students agreed, he would take their delegation to the Minister for Higher Education, Basavaraj Rayaraddi, to sort out the matter.

He also urged the students to concentrate on their studies. He told them that if they studied sincerely, they would not have to rely on the “carry over” system, he said.
