The police, during the preliminary investigation into the murder of a 28-year-old youth near Nidugere in Sakleshpur, has reportedly learnt that Congress leader D.C. Sannaswamy was the brains behind the gruesome act.
Sannaswamy allegedly hired a gang of youths to eliminate Ajay Satpal as he had been informing the police and other agencies about illegal transportation of sand by his men.
A senior police officer on Thursday told The Hindu: “We have taken five people for questioning. Soon, their arrests will be legalised. We are looking for others as well.” Regarding the involvement of Sannaswamy, the officer said: “It appears that he was the brain behind the killing. We are hopeful of arresting him too.”
The differences over sand business was said to be the reason for the murder. Satpal, who was found murdered on Monday night, had worked for Sannaswamy. Having fallen out of the group owing to differences over money, Satpal and his associates kept a track of trucks that carried sand without permits. In most cases, the trucks were stopped at the collection point handled by Sannaswamy and his men. Both groups often had heated arguments and minor clashes.
Clashes in rural areas of the taluk had become common. Unemployed youths have found a source of income in the sand business. They get money to keep a watch on officers’ movements, and earn commission for helping the truck pass the check-post without check. “Those making money by selling sand at an exorbitant price are making use of youths for their benefit. The environment in Malenadu taluk has been spoiled because of these activities,” said H.M. Vishwanath, former MLA.
