Mysuru City police has tightened security outside the residence of writer K.S. Bhagwan in Kuvempunagar in Mysuru in the wake of the murder of former Kannada University Vice Chancellor M.M. Kalburgi’s killing in Dharwad on Sunday morning.
Mysuru City Police Commissioner B. Dayananda said a City Armed Reserve (CAR) van with police personnel has been stationed outside Prof. Bhagwan’s residence since the writer made certain controversial statements earlier this year.
Prof. Bhagwan had drawn the ire of Hindutva activists’ after he allegedly disparaged the Bhagawad Gita while speaking at a programme in Mysuru in February this year.
After a complaint was lodged against Prof. Bhagwan and three others in a City police station, a pro-Hindutva group wanted to stage protest outside the writer’s house in Kuvempunagar. But, the permission was denied, said a police official.
Since then, a CAR van has been stationed outside his residence. Though five to six armed personnel were stationed outside the writer's residence, the numbers have declined lately. “The number of personnel posted for security depends on their availability. But in the wake of the Dharwad incident, there will not be any laxity in the security outside his house,” a police official admitted.
Meanwhile, when asked, Mr. Dayananda said proposal to scale up security outside Prof. Bhagwan's residence will be considered only after the motive behind Prof. Kalburgi's killing was ascertained.
