Police plan to start river patrolling

April 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - MYSURU:

To enforce the Supreme Court ban on sand extraction, the police is planning to introduce river patrolling in the Cauvery and its tributary Kapila.

Decks have been cleared to invite tenders to introduce a boat for patrolling purposes in the Cauvery in T. Narsipur, which is the hot-bed for sand extraction. Soon, similar patrolling will be extended to other parts of the district where the Cauvery and Kapila flow. “We will start with one boat in T. Narsipur. We need at least two boats here alone,” said Superintendent of Police Abhinav Khare. The police will recruit boat drivers and train the police in patrolling rivers, where the sand mafia uses iron boats to extract sand.

Mr. Khare dismissed allegation of police involvement in unlawful transportation of sand in the district.
