The Mysore police have cracked nearly 41 cases of chain-snatching in the last month. More cases were likely to be solved soon as the investigation in some cases was in full swing, the police said.
“We have definite clues in certain cases and some suspicious persons are under our surveillance. We have also released the sketches of some chain-snatchers. We are expecting to crack some more cases with the arrest of Dharmendra in Vijayanagar recently,” said Police Commissioner M.A. Saleem.
Addressing presspersons after felicitating a woman who resisted a chain-snatching attempt and two persons for nabbing two chain-snatchers in Kuvempunagar here recently, the Commissioner said the nabbing of two chain-snatchers, Chiranjeevi Prabhu and Darshan M., at Kuvempunagar here by Ravi and Santosh on August 19 had solved seven other chain-snatching cases registered in Kuvempunagar police station.
Around 105 gm of gold ornaments worth Rs. 3.5 lakh had been recovered, Mr. Saleem said.
Commending the brave act of the citizens, he said, “If we get such support from the public, we can free Mysore from incidents of chain-snatching and establish a crime-free society.”
Mr. Saleem felicitated M. Anuradha (50), a receptionist at a private clinic, Ravi (34), a driver, and Santosh, a shopkeeper, with certificates of appreciation for their brave act.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) M.M. Mahadevaiah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajanna, and Kuvempunagar Police Inspector K.N. Yashwanth Kumar were present.
So far, citizens have caught five chain-snatchers in the city, according to the police officer.
Residents have now become alert and call the police when they see suspicious persons in their localities. “Such inputs help us in detecting and preventing crimes,” he said.
Replying to queries on police patrolling in areas prone to chain-snatching incidents, he said 75 police personnel had been deputed for the same.
Pickpockets
The recent case of a man who was robbed of Rs. 5 lakh in a bus here has led the police to crackdown on pickpockets and take them into preventive custody ahead of the Dasara festivities.
Mr. Saleem said the City Crime Branch was probing the theft inside the bus. Based on previous records, pickpockets would be taken into preventive custody until the festivities are over.
