Plan to rein in ‘cable mafia’

Home Minister G. Parameshwara has promised a probe into the “cable mafia”. “Shortly, legislation will be in place to regulate functioning of the cable networking system,” he said. The monitoring committees constituted to enforce provisions of the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act, 1995 will be directed to protect consumers from paying above ₹130 plus tax notified by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on March 3, 2017 for 100 free to air channels, he said. “The 100 SD channels are to be mandatorily provided,” he said.
