A picture of the natural habitat of black bucks being destroyed by urbanisation in Bidar has won the special mention in the Nature In Focus awards.

Bidar-based wild life conservation enthusiast Vivek Krishnamurthy’s pictures of black bucks having no where to go after their habitat was destroyed by an expanding industrial hub and a ring road impressed the jury at the recent competition held in Bengaluru.

The competition has thrown light on the plight of black bucks that are native to Bidar. Laterite mining, expansion of the industrial area in Bellura village on the fringes of the Chitta forest range and construction of the ring road around Bidar has damaged their habitat.

“We hope citizens and the government wake up to the need to conserve the species,” said Mr. Krishnamurthy, who is also a member of the Bidar Photographic Society.
