Gulbarga recorded the season’s highest day temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius, as per the summary of observations recorded by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday.
Smouldering heat
This is the hottest, the city has been in three years. On May 14, 2010, a maximum temperature of 46.1 degrees C was recorded here, which remains an all-time high.
Sources in the IMD said the temperature of 43.8 degrees C was four degrees more than the average.
Highest in the State
It is also the highest temperature recorded in the State.
The minimum temperature of 28 degrees C was also 2 degrees more than the average, the sources said.
The heat has forced people to stay indoors during the day.
Roads across the district were deserted on Thursday afternoon.
IMD sources added that the severe heat in the district would continue for another couple of days.
Temperatures are expected to cross the 44 degrees C mark. Nights too will be warm. Surprisingly, in most areas of the Hyderabad Karnataka region, the maximum temperature was less than 40 degrees C.
Only in Raichur was it at 42 degrees C. Nights too were warm in Raichur, with the minimum temperature at 27 degrees C, 2 degrees above normal. Bijapur in the Bombay Karnataka region recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degrees C, again 2 degrees above the average for the period.
Rain in south Karnataka
Meanwhile, parts of south Karnataka got heavy rain. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall in coastal Karnataka, north-interior and south-interior Karnataka.
