Scorching rumours about plans to contest from a reserved constituency in Bengaluru in the Assembly elections, KPCC president G. Parameshwara said he would contest from his home constituency of Koratagere.

In fact, Dr. Parameshwara has undertaken several programmes in the constituency to prepare for the polls from Koratagere where he had lost the 2013 elections. The people of Koratagere are familiar with me and so, I will contest from there in 2018, he told The Hindu .

Loses to novice

The veteran leader’s career took a nosedive when he lost to P.R. Sudhakarlal of the Janata Dal (Secular), a political novice, in the 2013 Assembly polls and lost the race for the Chief Minister’s post in the process. In the 2013 polls, he secured 54,074 votes, while Mr. Sudhakarlal bagged 72,229 votes.

Former Minister C. Chennigappa of the JD(S) earlier represented the Koratagere constituency three consecutive times (1994, 1999, and 2004).

Following the surprising defeat, it took Dr. Parameshwara almost two-and-a-half years to enter the Legislative Council and later, accept the Home portfolio.

Seven years as KPCC chief

Dr. Parameshwara will complete seven years as president of the State unit of the Congress next month.
