Since students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Pre-University Course examinations have a lower pass percentage, a committee of the State legislature has recommended coaching facilities for SC, ST students at the hobli-level.
A 21-member committee, headed by former Minister P.M. Narendraswamy of the Congress, said a large number of SC, ST students have not been able to score good marks in Science, Mathematics and English in standard 10 and 12 examinations. Since the three subjects are being taught in English, students find it difficult to understand chapters. Further, the percentage of students’ attendance in these subjects was low, it said.
The State Legislature SC, ST Welfare Committee said the pass percentage of SC, ST students in PUC in 2013-14 was 49.47 and 52.41, respectively. The pass percentage of SC, ST students in standard 10 exam in 2013-14 was 76.85 and 77 respectively, the panel said.
‘No quality education’“The students are not receiving quality teaching and education in government high schools.” Moreover, the quality of teaching in Science, Mathematics and English is low, it said.
The committee has recommended that the departments of Social Welfare and Education make arrangements to provide coaching facility for the students at the hobli level to ensure high marks in examinations, and to submit a report to it on action taken within three months.
