Cryo – Surgery is destroying unwanted tissues and masses using extreme cold temperature. The principle behind is “rapid freezing and slow thawing is lethal to the cells.”
This is used in many fields of surgery, in General Surgery, Neuro Surgery, ENT Surgery, Gynaecology and dermatology. It is also used in the palliative treatment of non-resectable malignant tumors.
The recent advances in the techniques, avoids complications like post operative watery discharge and has made treatment of piles or hemorrhoids simpler.
The instrument used is a Cryo-probe of specific size and shape, with an active end of 3-4 cm. length Cryo-genic gas used is liquid Nitrous oxide, gives low temperatures upto – 98 degree celcius.
The Cryo-probe is applied directly over the pile mass for few seconds, after which it is allowed to rewarm. The freeze – thaw cycle is repeated and all the masses are dealt with. Patient is observed for 2-3 hrs. and sent back home.
Post –operative course is usually uneventfull there is no discharge unlike the older methods. Patient may complain of pain likened that of burning cold sensation which is relieved by analgesics.
Patient may pass some mucus and blood along with stools for few days till the total healing takes place for about 2-3 weeks.
Sharada Cryo-Surgery Centre started in 1991, provides non-operative Cryo-Surgery treatment as day-care / office treatment.
More than 30,000 patients have been treated and being followed up. Many surgery have undergone training programmes and have made Cryo-Surgery treatment facility available at their respective places.
