Heavy rains, which has been lashing Udupi district for last four days, has inundated many low-lying areas, houses and paddy fields, disrupting normal life, official sources said on Saturday.

Trees were uprooted in many parts of the coastal belt, sources said.

Flood-affected families in the district may be shifted as a precautionary measure, official sources said, adding, normal life was disrupted due to incessant rains.

Several kilometres of roads and many bridges were heavily damaged and people living in low-lying areas are struggling to drain water that has entered their houses in this coastal district, official sources said.

Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar told reporters at Bellary that he has directed Zilla Panchayat CEOs, Deputy Commissioners of respective flood and drought-affected areas to take immediate measures to tackle the situation.

“I have asked my officers to take up repair works of damaged bridges and roads in flood-affected areas,” he said.

In the revised memorandum submitted to the Centre, the state has demanded release Rs 11,000 crore for taking up short-term and long-term measures.
