After the second extended round of the Common Entrance Test – 2016 counselling, 15,561 seats have remained vacant in major engineering streams. Of these, 738 seats are in 12 government colleges.

“Every year, thousands of seats remain vacant in smaller engineering colleges across the State, even after multiple rounds of counselling,” said S.N. Gangadharaiah, administrative officer, Karnataka Examinations Authority. “In private colleges, managements can take a call on what to do with the vacant seats,” he added.

In the second extended round, 58,886 seats were open for allotment, of which 43,104 were taken.

Popular streams

Among the popular streams, 3,861 seats are vacant in mechanical engineering across colleges, 3,887 in electronics and communication, 2,682 in computer science, 2,540 in civil engineering, 1,721 seats in electrical engineering, and 870 seats are vacant in information science stream.

Under the supernumerary quota, 5 per cent of seats in addition to the those allotted per stream are available for students from economically weaker backgrounds at reduced fees. Most supernumerary quota seats in engineering colleges were taken during the second round of counselling. Since the supernumerary quota seats are not deducted from total seats, the leftover seats are not counted as vacant.
