Deputy Commissioner and District Electoral Officer D.S. Vishwanath has said that the district administration was geared up to conduct elections in six Assembly constituencies in Kolar district May 5.
As many as 10,63,455 people are eligible to exercise their franchise to elect the people’s representatives from among 100 in the district, Mr. Vishwanath told presspersons here on Friday. Among the total voters, 5,23,372 are women.
As many as 1,521 polling booths, including 12 reserved ones, have been set up. A total of 1,352 micro observers were appointed for the first time in the district to help Election Commission observers and to observe election process, Mr. Vishwanath explained.
Adequate security personnel, including police and para-military forces, were deployed to ensure free polling. The security forces have conducted flag marches in several places to instil confidence among voters.
Various activities have been conducted under the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme to create awareness among electorate about the importance of voting in democracy and encourage them to go to poling booths on May 5 and exercise their franchise.
Mr. Vishwanath said that 47 cases of poll code violation were registered in the district till May 2. During the raids conducted, Rs. 50,35,120 in cash, 616 litres of liquor, saris and rice were seized. Three paid news cases were confirmed out of the 14 such reported cases, he added.
Mr. Vishwanath said performing puja to the electronic voting machines either by officials or candidates at the polling booths is prohibited.
Jatras are banned on May 5. A ban has been imposed on sales of liquor from May 3 to May 5 evening as a precautionary measure.
