By now, we've all heard about how ubiquitous malware — or malicious code written to steal your information or cripple your network — is on the World Wide Web. Now, a new study by Kaspersky Lab on the state of malware on the Web in 2011 points to video entertainment (such a YouTube) as the largest source of malicious links.
The report found that besides video sites, dubious links were widespread on social networks and open-access sites.
Thus, search engines were rated as the second most popular source of redirects to infected sites, with users sometimes clicking malicious links directly from major search engines. Social networks were just one per cent behind in third place.
The report also observed that in 2011, no new mass-infection methods were used in launching attacks against computers. The main weapon of browser-based infection was still the exploit pack, which allowed malicious users to launch drive-by attacks without the victim noticing a thing. Experts at Kaspersky Lab expect the growth rate of Web-based attacks to continue to slow before the number of incidents begins to stabilise.
Simplifying your network architecture
Global networking major Juniper Networks and telecom services firm Nokia Siemens Networks announced the launch of ‘Integrated Packet Transport Network' solution. This solution comprises the Juniper Networks PTX Packet Transport Switches and the Nokia Siemens Networks hiT 7300 high-capacity optical packet transport platform.
The solution addresses the need of service providers to simplify the network architecture by integrating multiple layers into a simple, scalable design that improves the economics of the core network infrastructure, a press release from Juniper Networks stated.
For budding musicians
Nokia India announced Nokia Music Theatre, a unique platform for discovering and nurturing musical talent and helping amateur musicians showcase their talent.
With this initiative, in partnership with The Peninsula Studios, Nokia India aims to provide a “360-degree support” to talented musicians across the country, transcending boundaries of languages, genres and musical forms, a release from the telecom major stated.
The project was successfully piloted in Rajasthan in 2010 where 17 artistes were handpicked from small towns and villages. It culminated with the launch of the first music album, ‘Asha – Discovery of the Peninsula', brought out by Universal Music.
Enabling migration to faster networks
Hewlett-Packard has announced solutions that will enable telecom companies to provide millions of customers with a personalised mobile experience as they move to high-speed Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks.
A release from HP stated that the firm has two new offerings for communications service providers: a home subscriber server solution, which supports multiple networks and helps service providers move smoothly from 2G and 3G networks to LTE networks; and the HP Subscriber, Network and Application Policy (SNAP) management solution, which now integrates real-time charging (billing) to enable personalised services and offers to customers.
Hitachi deploys newest Intel processor
Hitachi Data Systems Corp. announced plans to expand its family of blade and rack server products for the enterprise market. The forthcoming Hitachi Compute Systems will be based on the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 product family.
The Xeon E5 processor was launched globally on Thursday.
