Power generation at the Sharavathi Generating Station (SGS) in Shivamogga district, which was suspended following an accidental fire on February 18, is likely to resume by March 20.
K.R. Shivaji, Chief Engineer of Sharavathi Hydel Power Project, told The Hindu that of the 10 units of the SGS, with a combined capacity to generate 1,035 MW , one unit would be ready by March 20 and around 103.5 MW of power could be generated.
Resumption of generation at the SGS is expected to help authorities manage peak-hour power supply during summer months in a better manner. The SGS is one of the main peaking stations in the State.
On fast track
Mr. Shivaji said repairs at the control cabin of the station, which was completely burnt, were being taken up on fast track.
Power generation in two more units would resume by the first week of April, and it had been planned to make all the 10 units operational by the first week of June, he said.
Asian Brown Breweries, a leading power and automation technology firm, has provided materials, including relay protection scheme and panels, necessary to resume power generation in three units. Tenders would be floated shortly to purchase the materials necessary for the remaining seven units, he said.
After power generation came to a halt at the SGS, water is being discharged at 2,500 cusecs to Sharavati river through Talakalale balancing reservoir.
