The strike by North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) employees came handy for a group of social activists engaged in developing green belts in different parts of the city. These activists, on Monday, came out to plant 100 saplings at the B.S. Yeddyurappa Marg. Another 200 saplings would be planted during the next few days.
The plantation was carried out in memory of freedom fighters. Placards with the names of the freedom fighters have been placed adjacent to the saplings.
Former MLA and BJP leader Abhay Patil said the road was widened recently and there was need to restore the lost greenery. Around 60 activists of ‘Swachh Belagavi’ team participated in the drive. Mr. Patil said the growth of the saplings would be closely monitored by the team.
The Green Saviours, a voluntary organisation floated recently by a group of youth, launched a plantation programme in April this year. Under their programme, the youth involve residents and other social workers in weekly plantation programmes in various localities on every Sunday. Those interested may join the Green Saviours team.
