Pourakarmikas working on daily wages at the City Corporation here scored a major victory in their long-drawn struggle for regularisation of their services, with Urban Development Minister Vinaykumar Sorake directing officials to prepare a note on how to regularise their services and pay the pending wages for 48 months.
The former Minister S.K. Kanta and Karnataka Pranta Raita Sangha president Maruti Manpade represented the pourakarmikas in a high-level meeting convened by Mr. Sorake at Bengaluru on January 23, along with the Municipal Administration and Minority Affairs Minister Qamarul Islam, Commissioner of Kalaburagi City Corporation Shrikant Kattimani and other officials.
Mr. Kanta and Mr. Manpade told The Hindu of Mr. Sorake’s decision to seek a detailed note on the status of the pourakarmikas and how their services can be regularised. The joyful pourakarmikas took out a “victory” procession in here on Saturday morning. The Corporation authorities also agreed to pay Rs. 1 lakh as compensation to family members of Ningamma, a pourakarmika, who had died on January 15.
A memorandum seeking disciplinary action against the Circle Inspector, attached to the Brahampur Police Station, who had reportedly ordered a lathicharge on the pourakarmikas, has also been submitted.
