Office of a local Kannada daily, Janata Madhyam , was attacked by supporters of a political party in Hassan on Wednesday.

The attackers burst firecrackers on the office premises, damaged furniture and abused the editorial staff.

R.P. Venkateshmurthy, editor of the daily, told The Hindu that soon after the results of the Assembly elections were announced, a group of Janata Dal (Secular) workers allegedly burst crackers in front of his office and also threw the crackers inside the office too.

“They were all supporters of JD(S) MLA H.S. Prakash, who retained the Hassan constituency. I could identify a few of them as they have been actively involved in the JD(S) affairs. They abused me and Manjunath Datta, managing editor,” he said.

On the motive for the attack, he said the attackers were angry with the paper’s views on Mr. Prakash.

“We had published several reports on the misdeeds of the MLA in the recent days. That must be the reason for the attack,” he said.

A complaint has been filed with the Hassan Town police.
