A total of 596 villages and urban blocks in Karnataka will be surveyed during the 72nd round of the National Sample Survey (NSS), which will begin on July 1 this year and conclude on June 30, 2015.
Inaugurating the Regional Training Conference of field officials for the survey here on Tuesday, Deputy Director General of National Sample Survey Organisation (Field Operation Division) A.K. Toprani said that 288 villages and 308 urban blocks would be surveyed. He said the 72nd round of the NSS would mainly focus on domestic tourism expenditure, household expenditure on services and durable goods and methodical survey on household consumer expenditure.
Mr. Toprani said the Hubli region of NSSO, covering 15 districts in Karnataka and the State of Goa, would survey a total of 25,300 households. In all, 5.5 lakh households would be covered in the country during the year-long survey.
Mr. Toprani said that creating awareness about the NSS was crucial for the outcome of the survey and the media had been playing a vital role in this regard. He said the NSSO would launch a media campaign in August.
Addressing the field officials, he said that maintaining quality in the survey was crucial as the findings were important in formulating national policies.
He urged them to first understand the survey components and the parameters so that it would be easier for them to get quality feedback from the public. He also stressed the need to submit the findings in a time-bound manner. Assistant Director of NSSO H.L. Lamani welcomed the gathering, while Anil Kakhandiki proposed the vote of thanks. Pramod Pandi compered the inaugural function.
Speaking to presspersons later, Mr. Toprani admitted that it would be difficult for the field officials to convince people to spend time and provide information. However, the officials would be trained to overcome this. “Sometimes it is not possible to get all the information at one go. Officials will be given 15 days to complete survey of one block,” he said.
