Notorious anti-social element Krishna alias Korangu Krishna, who is wanted in over 50 criminal cases, was arrested in Tamil Nadu on Friday.

Officials of the Organised Crime Wing (OCW) of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) raided his hideout in Thanjavur and arrested the accused, along with three of his accomplices, Loki alias Lokesh, Rudra and Tony alias Tania.

The police have seized a multi-utility vehicle, cash, gold ornaments, mobile phones, lethal weapons, including a firearm. The police said they had also seized a good number of telephone numbers and other details pertaining to businessmen, industrialists and realtors, from the accused.

At least 80 cases on charges of murder, attempt-to-murder, kidnapping, robbery, extortion and threatening have been registered against Krishna and his three associates in different police stations in the city as well as in Tamil Nadu, a senior police officer of OCW told The Hindu.

“The accused had been extorting money from businessmen, industrialists and realtors. They were also extorting money from brothels. Krishna was wanted by the Hebbal, Yelahanka, Vidyaranyapura, Jalahalli, Ulsoor Gate, Vyalikaval, Mahalakshmi Layout, Sadashivanagar, Hebbal and Hanumanthanagar police stations. There is a history sheet against him in the Vyalikaval police station,” the officer said.

In the third week of June 2009, Krishna had planned to kidnap another anti-social element, his rival gang leader. Krishna had instructed one of his associates, Dooth Ravi, to execute his plan. However, the OCW officials, based on a tip-off, raided a place near Kempe Gowda playground in Hanumantha Nagar and foiled that kidnap plot by arresting nine associates of Krishna, the officer said.

The arrested nine were thoroughly interrogated. “Based on the revelations during interrogation, we traced krishna’s hideout to Thanjavur and arrested the accused,” the officer said.

It is said that Krishna had kidnapped city-based businessman Suresh Babu recently. Mr. Babu was released after paying Rs. 1.28 lakh to Krishna. Krishna had also extorted a huge sum of money from another businessman, Solomon, and made him sign around 100 blank stamp papers.

Krishna faces several charges filed against him in various police stations. He had extended his activities to neighbouring States too. We were on the lookout for him and his gang members, who were absconding by jumping bail conditions, the officer said.

They will be escorted to the city, the officer added.
