Harijanwada and Timmapurpet localities in Raichur, which witnessed group clashes, lathi-charge and teargas firing on Friday and the imposition of prohibitory orders under on Saturday morning returned to normality by Sunday evening.
However, as a precautionary measure, the deployment of contingents of the Karnataka State Reserve Police and the District Armed Reserve continued in both areas.
“The prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code expired at 5 p.m. today and we felt no need of continuing it as both the areas returned to normality,” Chetan Singh Rathod, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu .
Cases booked
The Netaji Nagar police have booked a case against seven people from Timmapurpet, including Congress activist Harish Yadav, under various sections of Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 on the charge of attacking a Dalit youth from Harijanwada.
Another case was also booked in the same station against youths from Harijanwada on the charge of setting Mr. Yadav’s office on fire.
The Raichur West police booked a third case against the youths of Harijanwada for ransacking a restaurant belonging to Mr. Yadav. “We have taken two people into our custody and are interrogating them. The remaining people involved in the rioting have fled the district. We have formed separate police to nab them,” Mr. Rathod said.
