The council of the Belagavi City Corporation on Tuesday approved works worth Rs. 157 crore to improve the sewage system under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and another Rs. 33 crore for its operation and maintenance for five years from the day of its commissioning.
But, these developments will not come free for the citizens of Belagavi, who will have to pay a monthly cess of Rs. 15 (domestic) and Rs. 30 (commercial/industrial) to meet the cost of maintenance of the system, according to corporation Commissioner G. Prabhu.
He informed the council that the government had asked the civic body to collect some cess to meet the cost towards maintenance of the sewage system and expected the BCC to collect at least Rs. 1.25 crore every year and the government would sanction a matching grant.
The annual maintenance cost would be close to Rs.6 crore.
He said the government had made it mandatory for the industrial establishments to utilise treated water at their own cost once the sewage system was commissioned.
He also informed that the urban body would generate an additional revenue of around Rs. 35 lakh per annum by selling sludge cakes.
Residents will have to pay a monthly cess of Rs. 15 (domestic) as maintenance fee
