A new deadline to complete training of teachers in primary schools has been set for April 2019 by the Union Human Resource Development.
The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, mandates that all in-service teachers get D.Ed training through distance mode or from a recognised teacher training institute.
In a letter to the State government, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) stated: It is reiterated that this will be the last chance to acquire the requisite minimum professional qualification. Any teacher in the aforementioned schools, who does not have the minimum qualifications mandated under the RTE Act 2009, will not be allowed to continue in-service beyond April 1, 2019, and the procedure for dismissal shall be initiated against such teachers.
Tanveer Sait, Primary and Secondary Education Minister said, “This direction from the Union government will put many teachers under threat. I have asked my department to furnish details of the colleges offering D.Ed courses via regular and distance education modes.
The MHRD has also prescribed a timetable and stated that all teachers without training should register. However, department officials said the issue of untrained teachers in government and aided schools was not a problem in Karnataka and it was at private schools where the issue will have to be addressed.
