The Yadgir district administration failed to come to the rescue of those marooned in Neelakantarayanagaddi even two days after the village was cut off by the Krishna. Amarappa, who swam and reached the mainland on Saturday morning to purchase essential commodities, explained that Basamma, 75, is suffering from severe fever and she needed immediate treatment. He also said that two other elders were also ill.
“We swam to the mainland, but how can she swim?” he questioned. The situation in the island is grim as many are facing shortage of foodgrains, Amarappa said.
The district administration, which is aware of the annual flooding, had failed to take precautionary measures with fully equipped boats and experts, he said. On Friday, the service could not take off owing to technical problems.
Superintendent of Police Vinayaka Patil told The Hindu that rubber boat could not be pressed into service because of heavy inflow in the river. Hence, he was trying to make some alternative arrangement to bring mechanised boat either from Kalaburagi or from some other place, he said.
