The State government on Monday maintained that there is no clarity yet on the establishment of a unit of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Karnataka.

The Centre had announced the establishment of the AIMS in the State last year. But so far, there was no clarity from the Centre on the setting up the institute in the State, Minister for Medical Education Sharanaprakash Patil told presspersons here.

“We don’t know whether the proposal on AIMS is on or off.” Based on the Centre’s request, the State had suggested four locations – Gulbarga, Bijapur, Dharwad and Ramangaram - for the establishment of AIMS. But there was no further movement after the announcement last year, he said.

Following the delay, Mr. Patil had submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking clarity on the setting up the institute in the State.

One of the conditions imposed by the Centre was to provide at least 200 acres of land to establish the unit. The State was also ready for a proposal to consider the state-of-the-art hospital in Gulbarga which was being managed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation for AIIMS.

Common CET

The Centre has also been urged to bring a legislation to introduce one common entrance test (CET) undergraduate admission in medical collages.

He said newly established medical colleges in Kalaburagi, Koppal and Gadag are expected to get permission from the Medical Council of India for admission of students for the MBBS course. The MCI team is expected to inspect buildings soon, he said.
