There will be no change in rates of breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Indira Canteens, despite the Goods and Services Tax (GST). While breakfast will be charged at ₹5, lunch and dinner will be provided at ₹10 respectively, said U.T. Khader, Food and Civil Supplies Minister.

Mr. Khader told reporters here on Sunday that the state government would bear the GST and would not burden people, who will get quality food at the Indira Canteens. Work on setting up the canteens has been fast tracked and all the units will start functioning from August 15, he said.

The minister is a member of the five-member committee looking into setting up of the canteens.

Mr. Khader said one centralised kitchen will established in each of the 28 Assembly constituencies in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) area. Each centralised kitchen will cater to about eight canteens. These canteens will provide food to an estimated 1.8 lakh people every day, he said.

Political gimmick

Terming the midnight launch of GST in the Parliament as a “political gimmick”, he said there was no need for such an event for the implementation of a legislation in indirect taxation.

“Yes, it’s a progressive legislation. But, certainly does not necessitate holding a function in the Parliament,” he said and added that a lot of work still needs to be done with regard to GST.
