New Year celebrations: swimming restricted at picnic spots

The Mandya district police are getting ready to prevent any untoward incidents from happening on the eve of New Year, when revelry reaches a feverish pitch on Friday.

Superintendent of Police Bhushan Gulabrao Borase has, in an order, restricted swimming or playing in the water at a few popular picnic spots. He has also decided to deal sternly with those misbehaving with the public on streets on New Year’s Eve.

The Balmuri waterfalls, Edamuri waterfalls, Gosai Ghat, Muthathi and some other water spots are turning into a death trap for tourists. Hence, restraint on swimming is essential to ensure public safety as a large number of people throng these picnic destinations on Friday, a senior police official told The Hindu .

These picnic destinations on the banks of the Cauvery attract a large number of visitors from Bengaluru and other places. The department will deploy additional forces to prevent visitors from consuming alcohol or venturing into the river, and to monitor other activities of visitors in these places, he said.

Meanwhile, in a communiqué, Mr. Borase has instructed the managements of all hotels, restaurants, clubs, resorts and other associations to end their business activities before 12.30 a.m. on January 1.

The department would initiate stringent action against people found driving under the influence of alcohol and harassing women, it said.
