The group of 20 tourists from Mysuru, who were part of a package tour to north India and Nepal conducted by Karnataka Kisan Yatra Seva Sangha, have safely reached India and are in touch with their relatives here.
This has brought relief to the family members who were anxiously awaiting information about their well-being. Though the family members here were informed late in the noon on Saturday that they were safe, there was no further communication with them as mobile networks in Nepal were down.
Ms. Lalitha of the sangha confirmed that the group crossed over to India last night and were camping at Ayodhya on Sunday. The families of the group members have also been informed, she added.
There were 45 members in the group, of whom 20 were from Mysuru, 6 from Davangere and the remaining from Bengaluru.
Mr. Nandish, a resident of the city told The Hindu that 7 of his relatives were part of the package tour and there were anxious moments on Saturday.
“The group left Kathmandu at around 10 a.m. for Mankamana temple and the earthquake struck at around 11.30 a.m, by when the group was about 50 km from the capital city and hence escaped the disaster,” he added.
Communication
But there was no communication from them though the tour operator had informed that they were safe. “They were able to establish contact with us once they crossed over to the Indian side of the border at around 8 p.m. yesterday and we were told that all the 45 members are safe,” said Mr. Nandish. “My relatives are now in regular touch and call us frequently,” he added.
Some members of the group will return on April 30, while others have a few more places lined up in the itinerary and their return may take another 10 days, according to Ms. Lalitha.
