Need to disseminate awareness to uproot anti-women tradition: Manjula Manasa

January 31, 2015 07:01 pm | Updated 07:01 pm IST - Raichur:

Manjula Manasa, chairperson of Karnataka State Commission for Women, stressed upon the need for awareness among people to uproot violence against women. She was addressing a workshop on legal awareness to prevent offences against women here on Saturday.

She said that obsolete traditions and customs were acting as major hurdles in the way of bringing awareness among people and minimising the exploitation and atrocities on women.

"Successive governments have come up with various welfare programmes and laws specially designed for women’s empowerment and to prevent crime against women. But outmoded traditions with deep roots in society are preventing them from being effective. Women are victims of several traditions including child marriage and dowry system," she said.
