Safety first
Sir, — This is regarding the article ‘School bus flouting safety rules seized’ that appeared in these columns on September 24. Rickety, dilapidated vehicles should not be allowed to ply on city roads. School vans collect hefty sums to transport children to school and back, so is it not the owners’ responsibility to ensure that the vehicles are in good condition?

Aerial trouble
Sir, — That birds are posing a threat to flights operating from HAL airport, which is used by military aircraft and helicopters, and VVIP and private jets, is a cause of worry (‘HAL sounds out BBMP on birds threatening flight safety’, The Hindu , September 25). The area around the old airport has been neglected ever since the Devanahalli facility became operational a few years ago. Also, the storm-water drain near the airfield has become a dumping ground, attracting birds in droves. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike should pay heed to the plea of the HAL authorities and clean up
the area.

Responsible usage
Sir, — With the level of water in reservoirs falling fast, some sort of regulation of water supply is inevitable. Already, drinking water supply is restricted to about four times a week; more cuts are expected. Meanwhile, it is necessary that consumers use water responsibly. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board has its task cut out to reduce the unaccounted for water, which forms a large part of water lost. Household water meters need to be functional and faulty ones replaced quickly. All leaking taps and pipes must be repaired immediately. We have to tide over the water scarcity by being responsible citizens. Water conservation should be the priority now.
