Mysuru ranked cleanest city for second consecutive year

Bengaluru drops from 9th place to 38th

The city of palaces has done it again. Mysuru was ranked the cleanest city in the country for the second consecutive year by the Government of India in the Swachh Bharat rankings. Bengaluru dropped from 9th place to 38th. It also lost the cleanest capital tag to Gangtok.

Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath told The Hindu over phone from New Delhi that Mysuru retained its top position and the second place went to Chandigarh.

The rankings were announced by the Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi on Monday. The survey was conducted for 73 cities including 22 capital cities and those with a population of 10 lakh and above.

The public audit of Mysuru’s status as a clean city under the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan and the initiatives taken by the local authorities to handle solid waste, was conducted by Quality Council of India. It verified the records, conducted spot inspection and elicited public opinion before giving its feedback resulting in Mysuru retaining its cleanest city status.

The QCI was commissioned by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, to review the sanitation and hygiene conditions in 73 major cities for the revised rankings.

The MCC had launched a major initiative to retain the city clean by roping in the NGOs, school and college students besides spelling out plans for shoring up the solid waste management infrastructure. The city generates 405 tons of solid waste every day of which about 200 tons are processed but the rest are dumped in land fills. But the MCC has plans for establishing two more solid waste management facility.

The survey has captured absolute improvement at the ground level and the efforts made to put in infrastructure for solid waste management. The top 10 clean cities as per the survey are Mysuru, followed by Chandigarh, Tiruchirappali, New Delhi, Vishakapatnam, Surat, Rajkot, Gangtok, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Greater Mumbai.

The bottom 10 cities are Kalyan Dombivili, Varanasi, Jamshepur, Ghaaiabad,,Raipur, Meerut, Patna, Itanagar, Asansol and Dhanbad.
