The iconic Mysuru palace, the city’s most popular century-old tourist landmark, may soon get 3-D projection mapping with the Tourism Department planning to bring in this technology as a new attraction for tourists.
3-D projection mapping, which is increasingly getting popular in many overseas tourist destinations owing to its amazing effects on buildings, has been proposed as a permanent feature at the palace similar to the sound and light show, which was launched many years ago.
In addition to palace illumination and the sound and light show, projection mapping is expected to be the third attraction for those visiting the palace. Over three million tourists, including around one lakh foreign tourists, visit Mysuru to experience the palace every year. The palace illumination is the most sought after attraction.
“The modalities are being worked out. Perhaps, 3-D mapping for the palace may be ready in another six months with the Tourism Department in talks with specialists in the field,” Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep told The Hindu .
Mr. Randeep said Mysuru palace has been identified for permanent 3-D projection mapping as it happens to be the city’s major landmark and the most-visited tourist destination, besides being an architectural marvel.
Stakeholders in the tourism industry here had recently felt the need for bringing more attractions such as 3-D projection mapping for attracting more tourist footfalls.
This suggestion perhaps came after seeing the response that the first-ever 3-D projection mapping on the Town Hall during last year’s Dasara celebrations received. The heritage structure’s exterior was used as a canvas to put on view video displays as part of projection effects.
The displays had awestruck tourists who got to know a slice of Mysuru’s history.
Thanks to the specialised and pioneering technology, any structure used for 3-dimensional projection mapping comes alive.
This Dasara, a more superior projection mapping can be experienced at the Town Hall. Unlike last year, a story of Mysuru Dasara, which has a history of 407 years, will be told in 10 minutes with the help of this technology, Mr. Randeep said. “I have suggested to the 3-D design and graphic specialists of a Bengaluru agency, who is doing the 3-D projection mapping for Town Hall during Dasara this year, to recount the tradition of Mysuru Dasara in the form of a story so that tourists will get to know the rich past of Mysuru, the festivities, and much more,” he said.
