The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is keeping its fingers crossed as it awaits a response from the government on its proposals to construct two multi-storeyed parking lots in the city to meet the rising demand for vehicle parking space.
Last year, the two proposals were featured at Invest Karnataka-2016 in Bengaluru to attract private investment in developing parking infrastructure. So far, no private player has come forward to invest on a parking facility in Mysuru, but the MCC is hoping it has caught some attention.
The MCC’s earlier attempts to get funding for this had failed, with the Centre turning down its proposals in the past when funds were sought under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
The civic body has proposed multi-storeyed parking lots at Gadi Chowk off D. Devaraj Urs Road and at the vacant space in front of the KSRTC mofussil bus stand. The proposals are significant as getting parking space in the city, especially in key commercial hubs such as D. Devaraj Urs Road, Sayyaji Rao Road and Ashoka Road, has become very difficult.
When contacted, MCC superintendent engineer Suresh Babu told The Hindu that so far there has been no response to the proposals. “If we get the nod and suitable funds, we are ready to take up the projects. The MCC is also open to private investment on parking infrastructure,” he said.
The Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation is studying the feasibility of these projects. And so far, the status quo has prevailed.
Meanwhile, the MCC’s first and so far only multi-storeyed parking facility is coming up on Town Hall premises. After missing several deadlines, the project seems to be nearing completion. However, it has to be seen whether this facility will be available for use before Dasara.
