Minister for Urban Development S. Suresh Kumar on Wednesday directed the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to declare R.K. Narayan's house in Yadavagiri as a heritage structure and take steps to preserve it.

The Mysore house, where he lived and wrote some of his masterpieces, was on the verge of demolition to pave the way for a multi-storeyed luxury apartment building. However, Joint Director of the Town Planning wing of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) intervened and stopped the demolition.

Mr. Suresh Kumar said that he had learnt about the attempt to demolish the residence through the media. “Internationally renowned writer R.K. Narayan is a Kannadiga and it is our responsibility to protect and preserve his house,” he said.
