On the second day of the encroachment clearance drive, the Raichur City Municipal Council cleared more than 25 properties between Netaji Circle and BRB Circle here on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, six encroached properties were cleared along the same stretch.

Residents, who encroached on the roadside drains to build compound walls and other structures, came forward to assist the council staff in the drive. In other incidents, the people voluntarily cleared the encroachments.

Praising the people’s cooperation in the drive, Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikant Senthil reassured those who had partially lost their structures in the drive that they would be provided with house repairing charges.

“As we had assured earlier, compensation of Rs. 3,000 for each square metre of encroachment cleared would be provided to the concerned parties. Those who will lose entire house in the drive would be prioritised in government housing schemes,” Mr. Senthil told presspersons at his office.

Section 144 imposed

Mr. Senthil said that Section 144 of the Cr. PC had been imposed on the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal to prevent famers from diverting water to their fields so that the Ganekal balancing reservoir and the Rampur tank, from where drinking water was supplied to Raichur, could be filled.

As many as 100 villages across the district, he added, were facing drinking water problem and around 35 villages could face a crisis during midsummer.
