The popular reserved parking initiative for women motorists on Brigade Road, introduced in October by the civic body, has been replicated in Commercial Street and Garuda Mall.

Mayor R. Sampath Raj now plans to expand this to all roads where parking lots are managed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

Of the 75 car parking slots in Commercial Street, six have been reserved at the entrance of the street and four at the end. Russel Market and Public Utility Building will be the next to get reserved parking slots for women.

In the coming days, the initiative will be extended to BBMP-managed multi-level parking lots as well. The three-storey car park at Freedom Park, which is expected to be opened in January next year, will also have this reserved parking.

The BBMP recently floated tenders for smart paid parking lots in 85 additional roads. “Here, 25% of the slots will be reserved for women. We are making this rule mandatory for roads where there is BBMP parking,” said Mr. Raj.

One criticism that the initiative has received, however, is the exclusion of women riding two-wheelers, but officials said they are working on this.

“Parking will not only be reserved for cars, but also two-wheelers,” the Mayor said.
