Theatre repertory Rangayana, here, will play host to over 450 children for a month from April 15 as part of the annual Chinnara Mela, a summer camp.
Chinnara Mela, which is being held for the last 13 years, is among the popular summer camps conducted here.
Director of Chinnara Mela Mime Ramesh said, “We will be organising many events to help children to think and act creatively. They will be get hands-on experience in pottery, handicrafts making and weaving during the camp.”
Besides, there will be sessions by various experts and artistes of Rangayana. At the end of the camp, the children will stage a play.
On Friday, there was heavy rush on the Rangayana premises as several parents and children came to collect application forms for the camp which is open to those between the age of eight and 14.
Many people were waiting in the queue from early morning as the number of application forms was restricted to only 300.
The remaining 150 children who will participate in the camp will be drawn from economically backward sections of society.
Mr. Ramesh told The Hindu that Desi Samskruti (native culture) would be the theme of this year's camp. “Experts in the fields of native culture and folklore will be resource persons at the camp,” he said. Children would also be exposed to other forms of art and culture, including theatre, dance and handicrafts, he said.
‘Good response'
Response to the Chinnara Mela had been good, he said, and added, “we are planning to involve 1,000 children from next year.”
