There were signs of the southwest monsoon intensifying in the catchment area of the Cauvery in Kodagu district in the last 24 hours after a brief lull.
The district received 23.03 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Moderate to heavy rain accompanied by gale was reported from Talacauvery, Bhagamandala, Madikeri, Shanthalli and surrounding places.
The cumulative rainfall for the period January to July 4 is 779.65 mm as against 1,157.41 mm recorded during the same period last year.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has forecast moderate to very heavy rain in Kodagu.
As against a cumulative normal rainfall of 71.9 mm during the period June 1 to July 4, the district has received 110.9 mm which is 54.2 per cent higher. The rainfall in the catchment area of the Cauvery and also in the downstream was widespread, it said.
Moderate to heavy rain was recorded at Bhagamandala (67.2 mm), Nakoplu (41.4 mm), Sampaji (30.8 mm), Srimangala (23), and Shanivarasanthe (19 mm). Owing to incessant rain and cloudy weather, the minimum temperature in Madikeri dropped to 17.6 degrees Celsius on Monday.
The rainfall in Mysuru in the downstream of the Cauvery was also incessant though not widespread. The district has received 124.7 mm of rainfall against a normal of 109.6 mm from June 1 to July 4{+.}
Meanwhile, Mandya district has recorded 78.9 mm of rainfall against a normal of 584 mm during the same period.
