The famous thick and creamy curd of Kolhar village is all set to get a modern touch after the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) decided to make this tasty Kolhar curd available for people at all of its stalls in the twin districts of Vijayapura and Bagalkot.
Kolhar thick curd has been sold in clay pots for decades at Kolhar village of Basavabagewadi taluk. However, over the years, owing to short supply of curd and decreasing number of curd makers, sellers are unable to meet the demand.
Many curd makers said that since the KMF purchases milk at Rs. 34/litre, the producers get a good price, thus most of them have stopped selling to local curd makers.
To overcome this problem, the Vijayapura-Bagalkot milk producers union has decided to popularise this curd through KMF and sell it in plastic cups to meet the growing demand.
The KMF has decided to launch the modern form of Kolhar curd from Saturday and would be available in Vijayapura-Bagalkot from Sunday itself.
According to KMF officials, the curd could be stored at 4 degree Celsius in refrigerators for fifteen days without spoiling its quality.
In the beginning, the KMF plans to produce 100 litres of curd and it would be supplied to the twin districts. Based on the requirement, the quantity would be increased in the coming days.
“The Federation also plans to introduce this special curd to North Karnataka districts such as Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Raichur”, the officials said.
Meanwhile, many people who have tasting Kolhar curd for years, feel that they may not get the real taste of Kolhar curd in plastic cups, as they believe clays pots carry the natural taste of curd.
