Outcry:Workers from different parts of Mandya district staging a protest outside the zilla panchayat office on Thursday.

Workers from different parts of the district, who had worked under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), have demanded immediate clearance of their pending wages.

Under the banner of Karnataka Pranta Krishi Koolikarara Sangha (KPKKS) and Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane (JMS), they took out a rally from the Silver Jubilee Park on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway and staged a protest outside the zilla panchayat office here on Thursday.

The agitators raised slogans against B. Sharath, Chief Executive Officer of the ZP, for “not taking initiatives” to release payments.

The workers have been facing financials hardships owing to long delays in wage payments and hence the ZP should address the issue, they demanded.

The workers across the district were not paid in the last five weeks, Devi, district president of JMS, told The Hindu .

According to her, the total wage arrears under the scheme to the workers in the district are Rs. 93.52 lakh and the delay in payments is common in Mandya.

The Union and State governments have to release Rs. 1.98 crore to Mandya district to execute various works under the scheme, she said.

Later, the members of the sangha submitted a memorandum to Mr. Sharath at his office.
