MNREGA: where does Mysore district stand?

April 04, 2012 11:23 am | Updated 11:23 am IST - MYSORE:

Where does Mysore district stand in implementing schemes under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA)?

Officials of the Mysore Zilla Panchayat maintain that the district is ranked 21st in the State in MNREGA work implementation. However, Chamarajanagar MP R. Dhruvanarayana contradicts this claim. He says that the district is ranked 27th in the State.

Mr. Dhruvanarayana was speaking at a meeting convened by the Mysore District Vigilance Committee, headed by Mysore MP A.H. Vishwanath, at the zilla panchayat here on Tuesday.

At the meeting, MNREGA Nodal Officer Munirajappa said: “Mysore district was ranked 21st in December, 2011. It slipped to 25th place in January, 2012. However, its ranking improved in February-March, 2012. The district is currently ranked 21st.”

Refuting this, Mr. Dhruvanarayana said the district was ranked 27th as per the guidelines issued by the Union government with regard to the project implementation.

“The district has not achieved expected progress under the MNREGA. Officials must function responsibly as it is one of the ambitious programmes of the Union government. The performance is not up to the mark, going by the progress achieved every year,” he said. He advised officials to convene gram sabha meetings regularly to facilitate people to make suggestions on the works to be taken up in their villages.
